That is false information. The X1900 is over 25% faster in every category.

Oh right. I forgot that the x1900 existed for the G5 as well. It is indeed quite a bit faster.

Maybe this lends some credence to the people who were thinking that "the complete package" mean iLife included in Leopard.

    An autobiography?

I'd much rather read a Jobs biography and Apple history told by his employees.

I think there's a ton of hidden history and unsung heroes who will remain anonymous as long as Jobs is alive.
    It's not an autobiography.

If you want insider info thats highly interesting, check out folklore.org. It's only the first few years of apple, but the stories are fascinating.

Carbon fiber is passe'. Liquid Metal is the future. Remember Terminator 2? The T-1000 was made of liquid metal.

Passe'? I've never seen a laptop with a carbon fiber enclosure, so not sure how it can already be passe.

If they can make it work, I say bring it on.

    Imagine....

157/0 at lunch, some solid Aussie batting, some so-so English bowling, this is going to be a long day in the field if the rain holds off.

That said, this is already a rain effected series, Australia wouldn't have drawn the 3rd test if we hadn't lost a day to rain, and England would already have won the Ashes, so winning by a rain effected draw is fine by me, that's cricket and it goes both ways.

well i'm having heat issues with one of my systems. after messing around some tonight, i've got it running at 4.0 ghz, but no gpu folding. it did have 2 x 260s folding before, but was having problems.

right now i have the side of the case off, and a box fan blowing air on it. it's actually making it much cooler. so i might try to go for 4.2 ghz tomorrow

I rarely have anything good to say about AT&T, but this app sounds like a potentially good use of crowdsourcing. The question, of course, is: will this incoming feedback actually be reviewed and acted upon by AT&T, or is this effort primarily to create the "illusion of responsiveness" and make us all just feel better.

Either that - or they are really good at driving to be so close without hitting the brakes (ie no brake lights are on in the photo)

With only four fingers they can be pretty nimble behind the wheel.

I assume you're reading the chart wrong. The new i5 is faster than the old i7, even though the i7 has hyperthreading but the i5 doesn't. That's pretty huge. It doesn't look like the new i7 has been benchmarked yet.

Based on what? Are there benchmarks out for the new i7 yet?

I do agree with you that it doesn't make sense for most people to upgrade from the previous generation, but I tend to feel that way about sequential updates in general. But this does look like it has the potential to be a nice improvement, and I think the TB ports allow the new machines to compete with the MPs in some ways they never have before.

The processor in the latest 27 inch iMac is the same sandy bridge 2400 core i5/ 2600 locked i7 that's been out for awhile now. There are tons of benchmarks all over the net.

    Edit:
Heres a link comparing gaming performance:
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/the-sandy-bridge-review-intel-core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/20

It is faster, but nothing explosive that deems the first generation of core i5 / i7 out-of-date / they can't compete. Its just a marginal increase in speed. So it comes down to are you happy with 100 fps, or do you really want 120 fps? Is it worth a $2,800 upgrade to replace the former top of the line iMac for the new top of the line iMac.

Really, I only see it worth it for those on the former Core2Quads/Duo's.

would oled keys not be a lot better such as the ones used on the optimus keyboard concepts??
    http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/

Optimus has also a funny mouse..
    http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/mus2/

However, for my Powerbook a mouse that looks more like my Avatar, or at least one with a small rotating or bouncing ball attached would be more authentic :(

It was good to meet you all. However brief. Sorry I had to run off to meet with my Sister and her bf (they wanted to leave  :( yeah). Thanks again to v (er, Ani) for showing me how to get there, I was kinda lost.

I'll be back tomorrow morning, wandering around on the floor, but I think we're leaving at around 3 something.

Trying to copy the free Android turn by turn. Apple always playing catch up.

Hehe, nice one. That's exactly the reaction Google would get if they started working on something Apple already did. Where are the "Start your photocopiers" posts now, eh? :D

I don't think Apple is dumb enough ot release it in December. Think of all the 5.5G returns they would have. While they could obviously still sell the unopened 5.5Gs think of all the time their employees would waste accepting returns when they could be selling more iPods and computers. I think it will either be out before Thanksgiving or sometime next year.

Note that I'm not arguing pro-video iPod, but I don't think it'll matter if people return their 5.5G iPods. The Apple Stores will charge a restocking fee (probably 10-15% or something) and turn around and sell it open-box for 5-10% discount, which equals free profit of roughly 5%.* Meanwhile, everyone who returned theirs for the sake of getting a video iPod will then turn around and spend $xxx on top of that. So Apple isn't losing money, but instead gaining free profit on open-box resales.

*Disclaimer: I don't claim to know what rates Apple may or may not charge for restock, or deduct for open-box. It's simply a commonly-used tactic: charge a relatively small restock fee then sell discounted to consumers who think they're getting a good deal.

So free-profit would be an acceptable exchange for "all the time" spent returning iPods. And let's be honest, here: We've all been to Apple Stores. We know how many employees they have working at once. A BOATLOAD. I can hardly go in to browse without being attacked by half an army of Apple Store salespeople. The worst part is that they assume I'm an uninformed Windows user when in reality, there's a good chance I know more about the Mac than they do.

Anyway, this still doesn't mean I'm convinced that Apple will release in December. Let's just say it gets here when it gets here.

    -Clive

Who said this was a dumbed down edit suite and no longer for pros?
This looks AMAZING and solves dozens of the gripes that I deal with on a day to day basis.
Thank god that Apple aren't scared of naysayers and traditionalists like user 'Full of Win'!!!

I know! I'm watching this and I can't imagine anyone would think this is iMovie Pro after watching both clips. Sample level accurate audio, rather than frame accurate, that's the devil in the detail stuff that people are missing and no iMovie user would ever care about. ^_^

I LOVE that pitch driven audio frame scrubbing. Beyond useful.

And I'd like to reiterate something he says in the demo

"Don't worry everything I'm doing can be driven from the keyboard."

Best Buy sells all of the big name phones for all major carriers, and they have a dedicated section of the store for mobile phone purchases, so they can easily activate your phone or look up your existing contract. I've had several phones activated at Best Buy and not once have I had a problem.

*** Where is the best place to pre-order at? Or is it better just to wait in line at one of the stores and get it that day? If you pre-order, you won't get it on launch day, 24th, will you?

... I don't think it would be very useful. I would still need the full function of my regular keyboard while doing these other things...

Assuming this does come to fruition - I think you're missing the point. I don't believe for a moment it would be designed as a reasonable substitute for a full-size keyboard. I think it's for being able to lay down a few notes when working on some tracks on the road. Then come home and have a full-sized set up you can plug in to.

Think "in addition to" not "replacement for"...

Magneium is can be had for $16 USD/Metric Tonne

I like to see a reference for this one...the last I saw, magnesium was around $2000/MT. It was big news a few months ago when magnesium prices barely dipped below those for aluminum...I don't know the current prices, but there's no way Mg is going for $16/MT.

Edit: Just checked...Mg is trading for about 1.90 USD/kg.

No one but me seems to be worried that the viewer is essentially dead. I'll be very interested to see how actual editing works on this thing -- none of this addresses the process of selecting a clip, setting ins and outs, and getting it onto the timeline. All of this is about stuff that's already on the timeline, and that's where Apple seems to be suggesting you do the majority of your editing.

There is only one "viewer" now, which swaps between showing the timeline or editing clips. In the left side panel, you can choose clips, and they appear in the single viewer. Then when you drag them into the timeline, the viewer switches to timeline playback.

I think that this makes a lot of sense, as you would not use the viewer and the timeline playback at the same time anyway, so why not let it switch automatically between then two, saving space.
