Anyway, what would be nice (but a long way off) is a thin touch-sensitive OLED membrane of a keyboard. It accepts input and provides visual feedback, but can also provide tactile feedback by way of a series of pins underneath the membrane. The system could cause the pins to raise slightly, forming the outline of keys or perhaps bars for mixer controls or whatever. Like I said, a long way off, but that's the earliest that I can see this sort of idea actually being marketable.

What prevents the entire "base" of the laptop from being able to detect touch input like an iPod scroll wheel - but instead of up, down, left, right and "around," it's a keyboard, and gaming pad, a PDA, a DJ pad, video editing, medical field, education, whatever? Each different input configuration controlled by whatever application you're using.
    Dunno, just rambli'...

One nice result would be no marred screens form raised keys (tho that may have been remedied by these latest sunken MacBook keyboards).

Then there is the tactile factor... which is still important (I think). I use a Treo 650 and while I have the option to dial numbers via touch screen, I almost always (like 99% of the time) opt for the teeny tiny little numbers in the QWERTY keypad. Not 100% sure why, but I think it does have a lot to do with the tactile quality of the QWERTY vs. the absolute zero tactile aspect of the touch screen.

Expect software announcements at an Apple special event on 30 January (the consumer release date for Vista, as if you didn't know already). There Steve will talk about Leopard's Top Secret features and the new iLife suite, just so that once MS have stopped kicking themselves after the release of the iPhone and the bruises are starting to heal, they can do it all over again. See Zunes and Vista in bargain bins all over the world (I know that Zunes are only on sale in the US at present, but in order to get rid of stock they will be put on sale everywhere without any software support whatsoever).
As if M$ even wanted to make a phone, why on earth would they be kicking themselves? They've had a phone OS since before this iPhone dud was even conceived.

From a marketing standpoint your scheme there is a disaster, as Leopard will be drowned in Vista coverage. The only, *only* reason for synching the unveiling of OSX Leper with the consumer release of Vista, would be if they're going to announce that Leper will run on PCs. As if.

I'm totally there. For the last few months researching my next Mac laptop purchase, I was settled on the 13" Air. The max spec'd out version is way out of my price range though.

I then looked at the 11" mostly for money reasons and rave reviews from those that had used one. I priced it out and the max version of that one was nearly the same price as the 13" I settled on (128GB/4GB). So I switched back to the 13".

Now I'm leaning towards the 11" again. I personally HATE fan noise after the last few years using a 15" Pro, and the 11" Air seems to be the quietest portable available from most accounts. I'm sad that I'll have to sacrifice gaming after the Sandy Bridge refresh, but I will just have to catch up on my console backlog instead.

I think there should be a Movie about his life...

That kid who played Eduardo Saverin in "The Social Network" should play Steve Jobs in his early days

    Or Ashton Kutcher

Noah Wyle is a good contender. Oh wait... http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168122/

How would you like "transparent carbon" ?

Scotty has been at Apple working on the formula for transparent aluminum according to this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9kTVZiJ3Uc&feature=related). As you can see, the Materials Dept at Apple doesn't get the preview versions of Lion

I used to work with carbon fiber racing shells.Very pretty, but scratchable and can crack, especially when you start making little skinny cutouts like for keyboards and laptops that would then be abused in bags. Unless Apple gets the good stuff and makes some engineering changes, I don't think pure CF is a good idea. Plus, they'd have to transition their whole line to it, get rid of their unibody plants and paint the cases...

I think using the existing unibody plants, with upgrades, to make liquid metal/CF casings is more likely, cheaper, and nicer looking. If its even possibly to subject metal bonded to CF to unibody techniques. I am not an engineer.

600 Volt's so far. Production is still ramping up. A dealer in my area I know has sold out of his allotment for the year.

I have the 11". While it IS a very nice machine, I can't really get used to the size of the screen. My eyes gets tired looking at it. I also have an iMac 24", another story, another screen. And I have an iPad. The couch-surfing is done with the iPad, and my eyes don't get tired looking at that screen. So as much as I adore the look and feel of the Air, I can't really get used to the screen. So I am really thinking about selling it, and maybe later buy a 13" Air or maybe a MBP. Tough decision, ,'cause the 11" is a beauty.....maybe my problem is the lack of glasses on my nose :p

That said, this is already a rain effected series, Australia wouldn't have drawn the 3rd test if we hadn't lost a day to rain, and England would already have won the Ashes, so winning by a rain effected draw is fine by me, that's cricket and it goes both ways.

That's very true, it cuts both ways. I don't think England could pull off a win from here, but then again Austrailia need to up the run rate if they want to get another innings out of us without them worrying about their own second innings.

It really is starting to get very annoying.

Last night I could watch about 30 mins before I lost the connection. Now I have tried it twice, and after about 15 mins it's all gone.

Trying to download the whole stream via HiDownload, but..... also keeps stopping after a couple of MB's. :(

I wonder who has been able to download it completely yet. And even so this person has to generate a torrent fils orso.

Interesting app. Unfortunately the place where my phone drops the most also has a funky gps issue. My iPhone usually says I'm located anywhere from 10 to 20 miles away (and yes, it has the pin point orb thing and not the you're in this general area circle). So I can report the problem but AT&T will get some random spot in the city and not the actual position.

This isn't a GPS issue. It's actually something wrong with the AT&T network. The iPhone locates you with different information sources with GPS being only one of them. The information that the network cell tower provides is how the iPhones seems to begin its search.

Where I live (Essex county New Jersey), the iPhone tells me that I'm in near the Pennsylvania/NJ border - about 40-50 miles away - when I try to get my current location. When I go to Airplane mode and turn on WiFi, I get the correct location. So something is up with either the nearest tower or something is wrong with our SIM cards. You can make the report and see if others in your area have the same issue.

Otherwise, if things aren't resolved, I'd get a new SIM card activated. This was Apple's advice (confirmed by the WiFi/Airplane mode experiment).

    Bad move...

Obviously, there is huge demand for cheaper Macs. Cheap doesn't equal bad!

The reason there is a huge demand for cheaper Macs is simply because you can buy an HP for so little. If PCs started in price at $599, you wouldn't see people bellyaching about Mac prices. It's a market driven effect that really doesn't reflect the real market value of a PC in my opinion. Everyone trying to undercut each other just a little bit untill eventually everyone is cutting bone.

There is no reason this wouldn't work.

It wouldn't work. The reason PCs can be sold for that little is that the companies making them:

    1) Don't do much of their own R&D work (they mostly follow others' lead)
    2) Are making the costs up in volume (and Apple's volume isn't quite what Dell's is).
    3) They offer inferior customer service to what I think most people here would argue is Apple's norm.
    4) They have no software development costs. Think of all the programs that come on your Mac for free, not to mention OSX itself. PC makers are paying a licence fee to Microsoft that is paltry (and M$ makes it up on volume) but Apple has to fund development of OSX and the iApps somehow, and part of that higher Mac price goes to fund them. PC makers bundle lots of trialware and other software other companies have spent the development costs to make.

man you could be getting a lot more PPD if you overclocked the 2 home built i7 machines. of course windows is where the bigadv units are right now, so that's where the points are.

i am curious, what do you do when you get a new video card or processor, with the old one? in other words, do you use the old stuff, or just take it out and let it sit around?

that's the hardest issue i have with upgrading. i'd love to upgrade my system to a 6-core, but then i'd have my 4-core just sitting there

I've had problems with stability trying to overclock but maybe when I have some time I can do some tweeking.

Well so far old stuff just sits around :D I have 4 identical naked amd rigs I should get on ebay, they were too slow to make a difference in my points, plus other odds and ends I don't use any more.
