Is there any benefit of HDMI if you won't be using the HD-DVD's, and you only have a 720P TV?

It's relative and depends on the device. Generally, HDMI is clearer and provides a sharper picture.

When using component on my Oppo DVD player and PS3, I have "jaggies" on both menus and content. When using HDMI on both, the "jaggies" virtually disapppear and there is less ghosting during fast action.

Are you going to be able to tell the difference several feet away from TV? Depends on your eyesight.

It also depends on how your television handles (internal processing) HDMI and component. On my 32" Samsung, there is noticeable difference between the processing of HDMI sources and component sources. HDMI wins hands down.

You know there's a difference when non-techy members of your family ask "Why does the [movie, game, menu] look different?"

My Xbox 360 still works great even though the new one has been announced.....and they are not making me buy it :)

Though someone who wants an HDMI 360 and a bigger hard drive has a version they can buy now. I don't see what's wrong with that. More options for the customer....people wanted it and Microsoft gave it to them. They could have done a few more things but overall it's an upgrade.

The biggest news to me is this:
"A standalone $179.99 HDD also ships April 29. This package includes one 120GB HDD, software, and a specialized cable to port data from a user's current hard drive to the new one."

I can upgrade my hard drive , TRANSFER MY CURRENT DATA FROM THE 20GB HARD DRIVE, and start downloading a lot more from the Marketplace. That's excellent!

Sure, it's all speculation, apart from the fact that he drove off with her clinging to the hood, and continued for 35 miles, reaching very high speeds. This is more than enough by itself to qualify as attempted murder.
    Sure. Doesn't mean she's not a dumbass.

I'm just pointing out that you speculate as much as everyone else, yet you act like it's okay when you do it.

Sheesh, that independent study is all you have to back up yourself.

So, you would like me to ignore FACTS, is that it? I should just pretend that the study does not exists?

You are claiming that Wikipedia is not accurate. I'm saying that according to independent study carried out by the Nature-magazine, Wikipedia IS accurate. You are disputing that claim. In that case I think that you need to go talk to Nature and tell them that they have no idea what they are talking about.

on the A380 article, the height was changed from 78ft 6in to 78ft 3in!

Oh the humanity! So which of those figures is the right one? If it's the latter, are you then complaining becuase they find errors and fix them?

Thank $DEITY Britannica has no errors in it! No sirree! Nevermind the fact that it DOES contain errors as well (in Natures comparison, they found 8 "major errors". 4 of those errors were in Wikipedia, 4 were in Britannica.

And there are plenty more. I read one about "Larry King's farting habit" that stayed up for a month.

Exception to the rule. That is what Nature said about those kind of entires in Wikipedia after their study. You do know that there are over a million articles in Wikipedia, and you are whining becuase you found one that has some weird comments in it? And if it stayed up for a month, why didn't you fix it? I have actually fixed two articles in Wikipedia (I don't remember the other, but the second was some grammar-fixes in English article about Finnish mythology.). Took me about 5 minutes in total.

And maybe he does have a farting-habit ;)?

Yes, many articles in Wikipedia a accurate, but minor things can be changed without notice.

Well, there is the history-function that provides information to what was change, when was it changed and who changed it. So it's not like the changes simply appear without anyone noticing. Each article has a detailed history that shows EXACTLY what has been changed.

And when I said the thing about the bums, I meant that I'd rather read what a person with a PhD in Botany has to say about the Brasilian Verbena over a Wikipaedist that just has googled the subject a few times.

What makes you think that the article in Wikipedia was not written by someone who has a PhD in Botany? "oh no, they are just bums who use Google!". Generalize much?

So, what do you have do say? Maybe quote that study few times again for me, please.

Oh, I dunno. Maybe YOU could just say "but anyone can edit it! They are just bums!" few more times? Nevermind that it's utterly pointless and dumb, but that's the only thing you seem to have to say.

    "but.... anyone can edit it!"

Verizon does, in a way. I've met one of there guys.

They have 50 cell phones in a car connected to a computer that continually makes calls, checks quality, hangs up and does it again. They also have phones of competing carriers hooked up to make comparisions with the competition.

They have lots of these cars and drive all over the place collecting data to ensure that there coverage is indeed better than the competition. Like I said, I met one of these guys and saw the car first hand.

They have about a hundred of these test cars and trucks across the country, if I recall the business articles about them correctly.

And because their tests include competing networks, Verizon probably has one of the most accurate coverage maps for everyone.

As far as the iPhone app goes, I think it's a great idea for carriers without test vehicles and/or to see where the most desire for extra coverage is.

Edit: Here's a 2005 article (http://www.mobiletracker.net/archives/2005/04/04/verizon-wireless-hear-me-now)about a test car setup, with pictures of the car and test rigs at the bottom.

Glad to see that it is now so much easier to replace the harddrive on those iMacs - now I might get one and put a 500GB SSD in it :D

Just be sure to invest in anti-static screen roller. Once you've taken the glass off, it's almost impossible to get it back on without being left with a speck of dust trapped between the LCD and glass. 27 inch is twice as frustrating

    Can i just mention something??

I'm a musician and am very well acquainted with notation software such as sibelius 4 and Finale. What on earth would be the point in having a piano keyboard interface?? The range can't really be more than an octave, which is rather useless when writing... And even then, just to use it as an imput method would be so much slower then just typing the names of notes. Now one can press the letter 'a' and an A (the note) will be displayed. When using such software, it's not the note imput that takes the time, it's the changing of note values, and adding instructions and markings to the score. for this, the piano keyboard would be useless. What, so every time you want to write a new italian tempo marking, you have to switch to a keyboard?? sucks.

Oh, and some people may say that it could midi record and notate what you play... but this rarely works well and even then you're stuck with the range of probs just over an octave.

    Thoughts welcome.

I play guitar mainly, and although I can tap out melodies easily enough on a keyboard I am not proficient enough [yet] to play it a standard anywhere near my guitar playing. I also don't read/write notation (and have no particular desire to - call me a philistine if you wish!). So for people like me who want to be able to input/record notes live, it would sure beat mapping the notes to the qwerty-board. Presumably this idea could use something to make it velocity sensitive too. I think someone else mentioned using it to trigger stuff off in a live setting too. Plus this is ONE idea for something that could have many uses - if you don't see the point, fine, don't use it, you could use it for something else, like assigning pre-set value changes etc to already-input notes for example :)

That's a bit disingenuous. Yes there are editors who use FCP. And yes many Avid editors also have an FCP license on their laptop or home computer as well. Why not, it's cheap and can use third party hardware.

When you compare actual employed editors who work in Film and Television, Avid is still king. Apple skews the numbers by comparing the amount of software sold, but it's better to look at the projects completed and see what tools were used.

The question is whether this new release and their strategy is going to continue to draw working editors away from Avid or just continue to be a great prosumer video editing tool that has gotten easier to use.

You can't evaluate the product based on an Apple pitch if you rely on your editing software for a living. How do you know it kicks out and accurate EDL? How do you know if it still kicks out solid OMF files to your sound designer?

Avid, Final Cut, Premiere, they are all just tools and you have to use the right tool for the job.

Excuse me how is it a bit disingenuous when i say "some of the best editors in the world" use Final Cut Pro. I never said that Avid is not King of the high end in production houses.

I do feel that for myself as an editor, if i were to take the time to relearn the latest version Avid, I still would not be able to do as much as quickly, and yes as good looking of an end product as i could with Final Cut X.

I also understand that Avid has and may continue to have more necessary advantages for production houses and their workflows. I also know that people who work in those situations are often very tied to the solutions they are versed in and are less likely to try out something new - especially if it seems proprietary to their existing system.

It really is starting to get very annoying.

Last night I could watch about 30 mins before I lost the connection. Now I have tried it twice, and after about 15 mins it's all gone.

Trying to download the whole stream via HiDownload, but..... also keeps stopping after a couple of MB's. :(

I wonder who has been able to download it completely yet. And even so this person has to generate a torrent fils orso.

Here is my guess... I recently setup mac os x mobile sync for my laptop/desktop combination and it is sheer genius.

It basically gives you the same desktop on all your machines and synchronizes your laptop home directory w/ a set up scripts that run on login/logout and background

The problem w/ the setup is it is really meant for corporate farms as you need to set a slew of things up working properly (ldap, kerberos) to do properly. My guess is they are going to revamp the scripts and have an easy setup so people can "synchronize" on the fly btwn different machines so all accounts look exactly the same (but not using afs). This will be a mobile user for desktop and laptop configurations.. it'll waste some space but hard drives are cheap and everyone is "synced"

this will be the new and improved "sync" ... btw if this isn't what they are going to do i still recommend taking a look at mac os x's mobile user configurations as it really is brilliant (as it also has the side effect of auto-backing up your laptop to a different machine))

Is this a limited run as we had heard before?

No, according to Engadget and Joystiq.

Well, I guess I'm sticking to my plan of getting a premium X-Box 360 this summer. No point in paying extra for HDMI for my uses and 20 GB sounds plentiful for X-Box Live and game saves for me. Like I've said many times before, I wish there was a price drop, but it's not happening.

I agree that my missing FW port as someone who uses FW drives and Target Disk Mode a lot is my biggest gripe.

Well, I can't really complain about the lack of FW because I knew it didn't have it when I chose to buy it. It's the limitations they didn't make obvious that bother me, like Bootcamp.

But thanks for sharing the "Collectors Edition" title. I like that and I'll be using it from now on.

Looks real nice, but it's too bad they couldn't keep the standard USB connector built-in.
Yes, I used to want a Shuffle (even though I don't need one - I have a Nano) but now there is no reason to have one (for me, that is). I'm sure it's a great improvement in many ways, but without the built-in USB connector there is now nothing special for me about it.

when people say "it's China we're talking about", I wanna know how much do you really know about China and its system... from your news and tv/movie?

No, they will not get death penalty for this, and they will go to jail.

As of death penalty, don't you know there are death penalty in some states in the US? Anyways, these people are not gonna be put to sleep whether in China or the USA, don't worry.

If you can read Chinese, the source news NEVER said that those 3 people were "arrested" by police. The authority started investigating the case last year, and those 3 people were charged with Offence against Commercial Secrets. They deserve it because they probably made a lot of money of this.

Some laws are still there in a different country because they works there, or they are needed there. so don't put your western values on everything you see, just saying.
Don't tell me where to put my western values. It is not government's job to uphold the corporatocracy by putting employees in jail whenever their employer doesn't like what they did. Even worse in a communist country where the "employer" and the government might be one and the same. I have every right to know how governments treat their citizens if I might be buying their products.

In general, trade secrets are a civil matter in the US, not a criminal matter - there is no arrest, there is no go to jail, it is a financial matter.

If this article is wrong and these people were not "arrested" as the article says, then the article absolutely needs to be corrected.

I just got off the phone with the 75 and Park Lane store in Dallas and set up my appointment for 7am tomorrow morning. I was #22 and ordered a 32GB black iPhone. The manager told me they got about half of what they ordered and confirmed that they received 60 16GB black iPhones. She was in a hurry and I didn't get a chance to ask her if she got any white or how many 32GB black she got in. She also told me that they will only be selling iPhones to those who preordered. She wasn't sure of the exact number but believed that around 130 people had preordered at her location.

After looking at the photos of the new 27 inch iMac from:
    http://blog.macsales.com/9995-2011-imac-unboxing-teardown

I wonder why Apple doesn't release an 6970M upgrade for the 11,3 or even the 11,2 generation of iMacs. The heatsink looks identical to the heatsinks used in the two previous 27 iMacs. The shape, size, pretty much everything looks identical. They look like they would fit perfectly. Even if its slighty bigger, I'm sure Apple can make it fit and run great. There shouldn't be any technical reasons why not. Quite frankly, the entire layout of all the parts look identical. So why wont they? There's definitely a big market for it.

    Fixed.

Dell, Apple and HP all charge around the same price for their Xeon workstations.

    Dell Precision T3500

    Intel Xeon W3530 2.8GHz
    3GB 1333MHz DDR3 ECC
    256MB ATI FireMV 2260
    1TB 7200rpm hard drive

    Price: 1389$

    Mac Pro

    Intel Xeon W3530 2.8GHz
    3GB 1066MHz DDR3 ECC
    1GB ATI 5770
    1TB 7200rpm hard drive

    Price: 2499$

The ATI FireMV 2260 costs 120$ on Amazon so price wise it is similar to ATI 5770. You can add a lot beefier GPU and still save a fortune compared to Mac Pro.
