I certainly hope that Virtual Desktops make their way into this version of OS X. This is one of the biggest features I'm surprised that never made it in, considering that pretty much every other distribution of UNIX/Linux I've ever seen has a virtual desktop manager.

I don't know where the 'new monitor' rumor is coming from since I'm not seeing anything mentioned in the original post, but I wouldn't be surprised to see new monitors with a built in iSight, so pretty much all Macs can have a camera along with them. Will it also have a built-in microphone?

My Xbox 360 still works great even though the new one has been announced.....and they are not making me buy it :)

Though someone who wants an HDMI 360 and a bigger hard drive has a version they can buy now. I don't see what's wrong with that. More options for the customer....people wanted it and Microsoft gave it to them. They could have done a few more things but overall it's an upgrade.

The biggest news to me is this:
"A standalone $179.99 HDD also ships April 29. This package includes one 120GB HDD, software, and a specialized cable to port data from a user's current hard drive to the new one."

I can upgrade my hard drive , TRANSFER MY CURRENT DATA FROM THE 20GB HARD DRIVE, and start downloading a lot more from the Marketplace. That's excellent!

Probably only a matter of time before we hear Steve has locked himself in a tower and is peeing in mason jars.

(Howard Hughes reference, for you youngsters)

The Apple Board of Directors needs to put a leash on him and get someone with a cool head to officially respond to this. After "all phones do that" and his "facts" on Flash letter, I trust SJ as much as I trust a Congressman.

This isn't 3D at all. It's a 2D image that is adjusted through headtracking. If you move a 3D character in a game using a controller; that isn't mimicking a 3D display.

All 3D is a 2D image that is manipulated in such a way that the brain is tricked into seeing 3 dimensions. How is this any different exactly?

You might find it easier to split this into two projects, one for the server and RAID storage, and a separate one for remote access. I would advise against trying to get a single device to do both.

The use profile and availability requirements for the server and storage (online use, nearline storage or archive storage) will determine what is required, as a for instance, you might go for 16 2TB disks in a single controller RAID5 array connected to a single server running SMB or NFS for archive, whereas for online, you might go for a clustered server solution with 34 1TB disks in dual controller RAID6 array with 2 hotspares.

For remote access, how will remote users be authenticated ? what bandwidth will they have available at their end and at the server end ? how many concurrent users will there be ? what availability do you need for remote access

There are two main types of remote access to files. The traditional method is network level access over either PPTP, L2TP, IPSec or SSL. The other method is to access files through a HTTPS server.

For network level access I would probably use a Cisco ASA device, which could be clustered with a second one in an active/passive failover cluster if you have high availability requirements. I would use SSL rather than IPSec for remote VPN users as IPSec can have issues with some NAT firewalls (home routers) whereas SSL works over just about everything, also as long as you have an LDAP authentication back end (such as AD or, OD) having different groups of users having different access rights can be much simpler to maintain.

For web browser access I would probably go for the Barracuda SSL VPN device.

Who gives a damn if Magnesium burns? Some prestigeous car cockpits are made of brushed magnesium and they look gorgeous. Pretty much everything burns when powedered. And pure metals are very unelikely to be used, alloys are much better suited for any metal cases as they are even more durable. And if your current iPod did not yet spontaniously catch fire, an iPod in a magnesium case would not have either. Do you really hold your iPod over a bunsen burner on a regular basis? I would understand if they planned to make them out of Sodium. :D

I can't wait for Apple to replace the crappy plastic case by metal ones. Portable devices such as mp3-players, laptops, phones etc. should not be made of cheap scratchy plastic in my opinion. It's frustrating how my shuffle scratched within a few days of usage. But it's actually cool the shuffle has no display, I can trow it around without fearing to break anything.

If not metal, make the iPods like the black Macbooks. I torture mine and don't have a single scratch. Actually, there was one at the bottom once but I can't find it anymore. It's cursed I think...

I agree. I recently went to Asia for two weeks and I took my mini over my video, not just because the mini came with a charger, but it's better made. My video iPod scratched the first day I had it!

    * Some slogan about making OS X the "dominant platform" maybe? Nice to have something to shoot for ;)

That letter is an 'h' not an 'n,' you can see the very thin left half of a lowercase h. Probably says the 'right platform' or something.

    Vista has text-in-icon, doesn't it?

I find it odd that they show two different ways of warning for phishing: the red bar and the sheet.

I agree with that, maybe they haven't decided which one to use.
They are probably real though, nothing spectacular as most fakes usually are.

Today, August the 5th, is International Beer Day.

I had a cold pint of San Miguel at the beach this afternoon. Perfect weather for cold lager.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Beer_Day

    Their site (http://www.internationalbeerday.com/) seems down. Here's Google's cache (http://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:fVbfrsCc7-AJ:www.internationalbeerday.com/+international+beer+day&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk).

Apparently, you can thank President Jimmy Carter for the vast range of quality beer from small breweries you can now get in the US, as the previously post-prohibition and tightly-regulated brewing industry was deregulated, allowing small breweries to enter the market.

    Cheers!

Usually Apple doesn't have this much of a problem. Although I'm sure the "Digg Effect" from the submission of the link on Digg.com doesn't help us much either, or the growing population of Apple fans... :(

I wondered if certain bits of Color, Motion, Soundtrack and perhaps even Compressor and additional bits of FCP 7 might be sold as plug-ins via the App Store. And I'd imagine Apple will start soliciting third-party plug-in developers to make their submission for the Store pretty soon too.

Though I'd be very disappointed if Apple cut out key features of FCP (like multi-cam editing for example) only to sell them as add-ons I for one welcome the idea of them breaking up the studio and allowing customers to purchase only the parts they need or gradually purchase the entire suite over time.

I'd love to see Color (among others) get a facelift to match the new UI but I have a feeling that with all the effort on rewriting FCP we'll have to wait a little longer for the rest of the suite to get their chance.

    Oh, most definitely.

Wikipedia: nice idea, shame about the execution. Its greatest strength (i.e. that anyone can alter its content) is also its greatest weakness. I know which of the I would choose, and it would *not* be Wikipedia.

Go right ahead. That does not change the findings of the independent study. But if you decide not to use Wikiedia. you most certainly have that right.

I am glad that my sentiment reflects the majority on here.

If this is really what is about to be revealed, its not really that much of a big deal and most wont use it (except out of curiosity).

I appreciate the whole SJ henry ford quote and all, but his is really an unusable concept for the majority that like to be in control.

    My opinion.

I wonder what over profit generating uses Apple intends to use location data, collected with location services off, in the future ?

The better Apple does, the more desperate you are to find something, *anything* to hold against them. Most of which is actually meaningless. The latest is the cell-tower logging issue. You do realize that about 90% of tech companies out there would kill to have this be their biggest problem . . .

This one is for the materials science geeks on this forum. I had a look back to this patent where Apple was researching Carbon fibre shells:
    http://www.macrumors.com/2009/04/30/apple-researching-carbon-fiber-composite-materials-for-exterior-shells/

I was also looking at how long they've been working with Liquid metal:
    http://m.gizmodo.com/5608322/is-apple-working-on-liquid-metal-terminators-or-what

And it seems to me that they are pursuing BOTH technologies with equal effort. It seemed strange to me that they would put so much effort into to two technologies when they would likely only use one for cases/structural requirements.

And thenI found this excerpt from a book which describes how to fuse carbon fibre with metal alloys to create a sandwich which is similar to the first patent l linked to above.:
    http://books.google.com.au/books?id=aCm9yvodiJcC&pg=PA192&lpg=PA192&dq=liquid+metal+carbon+fibre+sandwich&source=bl&ots=qo5jE32X5e&sig=DFK_MIvPzfsvjjgl445HD_urpHU&hl=en#v=onepage&q&f=false

Based on all this, my guess is that apple is making some kind of fusion casing material that will be mouldable like liquid metal, have the extra strength of carbon fibre, and have the strength/weight properties of both. That would also explain some of the "darker" metal/liquid metal pics that have been floating around.

    What do you think?

Cool. Thanks for contributing something insightful and interesting, MikeELL (unlike some folks--like me).

I prefer to play it on ps3. Ordered mine and it is coming today or tomorrow.
Congrats. By buying the PS3 version, you also get the Mac and Windows versions too. Once you get the PS3 version, link it to a Steam account. Then download Steam on your Windows or Mac machine and redeem the code that comes in the PS3 box.

PS3 owners can also play co-op with Windows/Mac users. Save game progress however will not move between the PS3 and Windows/Mac.

The irony here is that people who buy the game for Microsoft's XBox 360 do not get a code for a copy on Microsoft Windows, and 360 owners can only play co-op with other 360 owners. Only by buying Sony, do you get Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac versions along with shared co-op play.

:) I bought it for Windows as such. No question, Window's allows the BEST gaming experience...both in hardware support, and W7:DX11 > OSX:OpenGL
You also bought the Mac version. There is no Windows only version, and thats the great thing. Much like Blizzard, Valve has signed onto the one release model, and is even trying to push that into the consoles. Buy the game, not the game for the platform. Play it on your beefy hand built Windows gaming PC, and your travel MacBook Pro. One copy.

Now if only more games would do this. I don't buy games from Feral, or Aspyr since they tend to be released way after the Windows version (with little to no pre-anouncement so I know to not buy the Windows one), and tend to add more DRM (Only version of Quake Wars that requires a disc is Aspyr's Mac version, Windows and Linux = no disc DRM crap). As much as I like to be a Mac gamer, I'm a gamer first, Mac owner second.
