Thank you all for your help so far! I'm getting closer to some conclusions thanks to you!
The speed of my internet connection has been brought up a couple times, I have a T1 connection and plenty of bandwidth.

    [...]

These look great, but I'm thinking I might be able to build something to meet my needs for less money. I have the skills to put a server together and set it up, this is just my first time creating a rig from the ground up. Thoughts?

In answer to your earlier question about memory, if are just pushing files, maybe email and calendars to ten users (usually 2 or three), you probably don't "need" more than 8GB. You could go with 16GB. Don't get the memory from Apple as you will pay a premium. That is an easy cost saver there, but it only costs $400 to take it to 16GB, so on a $25k project, that might not be too much.

I'm not sure what you mean by "T1" for network connection. If it is a traditional T1, that is only about 1.5Mbps - which isn't really that fast. I have 20Mbps down/4 Mbps up from my cable company (but that is for residential use). Up speed is going to be important if you are serving files.

If I were building a rig for a business, I would try to get as much stuff that is turnkey as possible rather than building major parts myself. Time is money and you will spend a lot of time building a rig - and then having to maintain it. You are better off investing in one of the (expensive) arrays listed about (or similar). You just plug it into a rack and your MacPro and you will be good to go. Plus, at least a couple of those listed had redundant power supplies, etc. That is going to give you a lot of confidence in system availability (downtime, which is also money).

I'm impressed that the iPad held up so well. Props.

BlendTecs are pretty bad ass. I'll get one if they have a stainless steel one. When in college I got a slap chop and a sham wow because they impressed chicks. Now it's time to get the BlendTec and start really pulling tang!:D

As for people who are disgusted etc... saying it's wasteful and crying for the environment. Come on. It's advertising... Have you thought about what you did to impact the environment or economy today? If you are worried then why aren't you outside planting a tree or collecting money to send an ipad to a kid?(instead of using up energy to run your computer to post on a forum dedicated to things like ways to keep older energy whoring models alive longer (among other things of course and yes that was an extremely close minded statement. I was just trying to come up with an example to use) also people who keep their Macs longer aren't; as they say, 'helping the Economy'.

Anyways it shouldn't be considered too wasteful. Keep in mind apple is a 'greener' computer manufacturer.:p

At least the sales that BlendTec will make as a result of this video will be taxed and the govt will put the money to great use a they always do right?

    Anyways. "I ain't hatin'"

Mac keep Macin. Forum keep foruming. BlendTec keep blending. And Apple come out with the new MacBook Pro already Gahhhhhhh:eek:

    </end rant>

    - Sent from my energy sipping iPhone 3GS. And my 2G went to a friend in need. Not a kid but he acts like one sometimes...

It better get released in Europe with little gap between the US.

I'd like a new phone, and one made by Apple is a definite yes.

Though with all this great stuff coming, I'll be broke :P

I realize this is what happens with every other fancy new phone, but I imagine an Apple phone would come out in the US first and Europe later.

Depends on what you are doing in Enterprise. Think Reprographics. :apple:
    Racks of servers for Reprography?

That can be handled by a desktop/workstation for the computing end, while the real work is done by the printer technology used to generate the actual output (banners, blueprints, ...).

It might be interesting to see if games for phones become a profitable revenue stream for game developers since they can skip several of the middle men via downloading games, instead of through traditional retail.

I think that was shown to be the case a long time ago.

    GSM - 2G (Cingular)

    Both use CDMA
    EVDO - 3G (Verison,Sprint)
    UMTS/HSDPA - 3G (Cingular)

I don't think the iPhone would use an outdated technology like GSM considering Apple was the first company to stop supporting floppies, and analog serial connectors. There is a tremendous amount of potential in next gen wireless applications none of which GSM could support.

Yea I was suggesting Linux or Unix for the supermicro build,
3tb are a bad idea for a pruduction environment cos there less reliable slower have far longer rebuild time for raid are more expensive the list goes on

I disagree, if you followed that logic then why stop at 1 TB or 2 TB, why not build on 72 GB SCSI. "Production Environment" is a little bit of a arbitrary distinction, this is a small business with relatively low parallel usage on a tight budget, 3 TB drives would be perfectly suitable. Real high performance "production environments" would be using 15k FCAL, SCSI or SAS in enterprise chassis, but we obviously don't have the budget for that.

RAID rebuild time is going to be more affected by RAID-6 instead of RAID-5, by software RAID instead of hardware RAID than by 3 TB vs 2/1 TB. The double parity overhead of RAID-6 makes it very slow, but for a budget 30 TB filesystem I can't think of a better tradeoff.

Advantages of 3 TB drives - chassis needs fewer bays, future expandability with the same bays is better, administration is easier (fewer drives, fewer potential points of failure), power draw is significantly less - if you've shopped for colo's lately you'll find that power is pretty expensive these days, moreso than rackspace or arguably bandwidth.

RAID-5 would be ridiculous especially if you were to go with 31 1TB drives, that would be so risky it's ludicrous. Two drives go out and you just lost all your data. Thats 3% of your drives can fail and you're SOL.

RAID-6 with 12x 3TB drives you can lose 2 drives before you lose data, or 17% of your drives. Much safer. Thats 2 out of 12 instead of 1 out of 16 or 31. I think the advantages of 3TB are clear.

    Rob

Heres the problem with more and
More streaming cloudy stuff ... The bandwidth bottleneck. Surely apple sees that there is a crisis coming because, for whatever reasons consumers, especially wireless consumers, are finding it harder and more expensive to get fast reliable cost effective service. Could apple have plans to somehow address that issue with their data center? They seem like a company that looks
Forward to address problems before the erupt in crisis

Its called snap and it's the most distracting and annoying feature ever. And you cannot even disable it. I would prefer it if Apple thought up of something of their own rather than copy features off the opposition.

Personally, I and most of the people I know really like it (including a number of Mac users who have to use Windows 7 at my work). And for those that don't, you can indeed turn it off. There's an option in the "ease of use" area of control panel...If you can't find it, just google...

This is a feature I'd like to see in 10.7. Also, the Windows 7 Explorer's address bar "breadcrumbs" with the drop down subfolder list of any folder in your path is useful. I know Finder has the breadcrumb bar as an option, but the subfolder list is nice.

I don't think they should add cut and paste because it's metaphorically confusing (and they never will add it for this reason), but a Path Finder-like drop stack (which is essentially the same thing, but with visual cues) would be very nice.

A Path Finder-like split view is would also be very handy for moving files.

The OS doesn't need built-in social media integration. There are plenty of twitter clients, and the official Facebook Notifications menu bar item is fine.

I will upgrade if the bottom line of the new generation will outperform the iMac of the top line of the series I have (mid 2010).

Yes, upgrading for anyone with a 2010 makes little sense. You, however, you listed computers all the way back to 2007.

What i have discovered with this update is that...in previous ios the location services would show all the apps that requested location....and then you could turn it off individually....but location services were always adding more apps to the list. Now when you turn off the location services..after some time the list is erased. So the cache is erased.

Another thing witch is very good for me....and is finally addressed is that now there are no notifications in apps and games that require internet connection...sending you to the settings....if you don't use your data plan there are no notifications...even in your sms app...witch may be the reason why I'm finally satisfied with this update and maybe i will not update my device any time soon...

the animations on my 3gs are very smooth...probably the smoothest after 4.3 debacle and battery is back to normal

What does it cost these magazines to digitize an issue each month? Is there a team of 2 people or 20 putting the digital version? All the articles have been written and researched, the photographs and artwork already exist in digital form as well as the layout. What they save on digital issues; no paper, ink or printing costs, no delivery cost or at least a lot less. One thing they loose however is shelf space, how many times have you stopped in a store and thumbed through a magazine because the cover grabbed your eye.
