However, when the Merom based iMacs come out (WWDC), and the Edu-iMac is left behind with Yonah, then they will probably go back to the previous policy.
Apple should drop all Yonah products as soon as sufficient Merom chips are available to do it.

Imagine The Steve saying "Mac - all Intel, all 64-bit" in Paris.

It would be to Apple's (and third parties') advantage to get rid of all 32-bit MacIntel's as soon as possible, so that "even fatter binaries" won't be needed to support the small number of 32-bit MacIntel's sold.

It will cost Apple and others a lot of money to support both 32-bit and 64-bit systems.

I'm pretty sure you don't live here... every illegal immigrant that enters England pretty much gets to stay 90% of the time. My tax money goes to housing them, giving them a car, and whatever else they desire. I'm being treated as a second class citizen to illegal immigrants. Please NEVER EVER accuse someone of being racist, when I haven't once mentioned anything that is racist, I take great offence to someone calling me a racist. I am not a racist. I just do not like illegal immigrants entering my country, be it if they are white, brown, black, or green.

Then you have a problem with your nation's social and immigration policies, not with the immigrants.

When you write out posts placing the blame on specific types of people, you are being prejudiced and discriminatory.

Since I can see that you didn't mean that (or at least not anymore), my advice to you is to write more clearly.

I think "I'm a second class citizen in my own country" says it all.

I rather think so too. It lays out the paradigm quite clearly.

Apple dugg a huge hole for themselves. They played with the marketing and PR department promising a truly revolutionary product like it is the case with each new iteration of the iphone and then the ppl believed and thought they REALLY REALLY need to have it.

Once they got it in their hands, they got offended that it is not working like they were told. Its understandable on one hand but on the other its just pure irony that the ppl really believe they need a new cell phone every year.

Its both sad and genius on Apples part.

I'm suprised nobody has mentioned 3 TB drives, you can get 7200 RPM 3TB drives for $179 or 5400 RPM 3TB drives for $149 these days, why not reduce the number of bays you need by ~50%.

It doesn't sound like you need incredibly high performance given that it's for archiving video and your internet uplink is only 1.5 MB.

You didn't mention your budget, if it's on the low side, I'd go with a Linux NAS, you could build the whole thing for under $4k.

    $335 20-bay SATA chassis http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219033
    $300 for 2x Intel SASUC8I 8 port SATA controllers
    $80 for 4x SFF-8087 cables
$500 for a Mobo, RAM, CPU
    $2100 for 14x 3TB 5400 RPM drives @ $149 each
    $150 ~800watt quality power supply
$150 misc cooling fans & wiring, dvd drive

Run it RAID-6 with 2x hot spare on Linux. If afpd meets your performance expectations, you're good to go. I have a 10x 5200rpm 2TB RAID-6 linux NAS media server on a 3 or 4 year old low end athlon x2, I get 250 MBps on reads with software RAID-6. afpd is single threaded and will likely be a frustrating bottleneck for writes, it will hang during writes while it syncs to disk periodically. The above config would have no problem saturating gig ethernet during a read and come close to it during a write. Using it as a SAN via iSCSI may allow for higher performance, although you'd need to bounce incoming connections off another server.

So thats your low end, look into redundant X-Serves with DAS arrays for your high end (or EMC if you have a few hundred grand to blow).

Keep in mind RAID is not a replacement for backup, if you are not going to backup to external media at least consider a filesystem with extra space and snapshots, and maybe a second identical server you can replicate to. A higher quality chassis, redundant power supplies, hardware RAID, an X-Serve w/ DAS would be nice steps up.

    Rob

    Hello kind folks of MacRumors.com-

I am wishing for help and advice deciding what type of hardware to purchase for a 30TB server. It must meet the following requirements:

    • 30TB RAID (Redundancy important for backup purposes)
    • Remote Accessibility in that I would like to be able to pull files from it anywhere that I have an internet connection.
    • Macintosh friendly– it does not need to run OS X Server, it just needs to connect without hassle to Macs.

This will be used for at my office for archiving video. We may want to use Final Cut Server to sort the files in the future. I have been tasked with building this setup and am hoping for suggestions from one of the brightest communities on the web. :D

Your time in responding is much appreciated.

I think we most likely held it down too long.
    From http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303364

Hold down the power button until the power indicator light flashes, then release it. A long tone will be heard, then a gray screen with an Apple logo appears. There is a progress bar under the logo. As the progress bar moves, your firmware is being updated.

Jon Stewart is an unimaginable idiot. He strikes me as fairly bright person, who like all TV talking heads, is intentionally stupid on TV, which is why I cannot watch.

His opening comments forced me to shut it off before even getting to the part about Apple....if he doesn't know by now that Obama is aiding in dismantling the Constitution, just like Bush did, just like Clinton did, just like Bush before that, then you're either an idiot, or intentionally trying to deceive and divert people, and for both reasons I cannot watch Jon Stewart.

Whilst you're right that many of us would struggle picking out our favourite beer brands from a line up it would be easy to spot the one that doesn't actually taste of beer at all, namely Budweiser.

Very true. I was over a friends house the other day. We get together regularly for beer tasting, always having some micro offering to try. One day he slipped me a Bud Light. Damned near threw up.
But let people drink what they want. I really don't care to get into some petty argument about what they "should be drinking". My little beer secret: When I am cutting the lawn and it's real hot, I actually like a High Life on occasion. Diss me for THAT and you'll see a bottle upside you're pretentious head.

Called every AT&T store in my area (Exton, PA) and not a single person had a clue about the white iPhone. One lady said "I think it's all just hype, we have no information on any incoming shipments". So unless they were just misinformed or hiding something, it doesn't look like they will have any in stock tomorrow. Called my local Apple store and the guy gave a really generic corporate response along the lines of "if you don't see it on the apple site I don't know anything about it". Sounded kind of fishy to me.

If the AT&T stores really don't get them in stock tomorrow, why did numerous international carriers get them in? Since apple sent them white units, why haven't they made a press release?

The white iphone has been very mysterious since the beginning.

If the employees want to keep their jobs and the store's good standing relationship with Apple, they won't willingly tell you about an unannounced product. Plain and simple. That's how they're trained to respond and they're not going to tell you a secret just because you asked nicely.

First I wasnted to thank everyone who has posted advice and comments about my temple surface piercing.

So with the help of the advice from the people in this forum, regaurding finding a new piercer and swap out the bananabell for a surface bar for my anti-brow temple piercing.

I did a little research about surface piercing and what causes them to fail
(which I should have done first before getting pierced, but anyways)

I noticed today that my piercing wasnt exactly happy, a bit tight, so I went down to a more local piercer in Mountain View, CA at Fatty Zone to get a check up to make sure everything was fine. The piercer was out for the till Monday, but the owner said that it looked as if the lower ball was starting to get sucked in. (great) He recommended that I go down to Pierce Ink, where he had sent his piercer (From Fatty Zone) to get trained.>>(Seperate Note) I had stopped in earlier that week and talked to the piercer about piercing my webbing, he said no, and took the time to explain to me why he would not pierce it and why it isnt a good area to pierce. For him to say no, refuse my money, and inform me, I am very grateful for.

I went down to Pierce Ink in San Jose CA, as I pulled up everyone was having a smoke, and we chatted a bit about my piercing, surface bars, gauge, and Zebra Tattoo and Piercing.
As it turns out I was the third person that week that had a surface piercing done at Zebra and came down to have their piercing salvaged because Zebra used the wrong jewelry. I also heard horror stories reguarding botched tounge piercings (personal horror story of one of the piercers who had it done at Zebra) , cleanliness issues etc. Anyways, I got the bananabell swapped out of a surface bar with discs.

    http://homepage.mac.com/neildmitchell/Piercing_Update.jpg

The piercer(s) were very helpful, knowledgeabe, and professional, they too will also refuse to pierce certain areas.

So anyways, I salvaged an almost botched surface piercing. I still have a long healing process, so we will see if it gets rejected eventually or not.

    1) Dont get pierced on a whim, from any old place, do your research (jewelery, techniques, reputation)

    2) If a piercer tells you NO and explains why, trust them, dont go running off to a piercer who will pierce you where others wont.

    3) Slam bad piercers or piercing businesses

    4) Promote the Good Piercers

Save people from getting bad pierce jobs (or worse), and keep good piercers employed.

    GOOD PIERCERS

    3) (from Moe http://profile.myspace.com/13706036)

The piercer (Todd) is very helpful, takes his time to make sure he measures you to the best of his ability. He gives you ALL info possible and his business card and tells you to call if you have ANY questions at all. This place is the most helpful, knowledable, and people friendly shop that i have ever been to.

    BAD PIERCER

    Zebra
    2467 Telegraph Ave
    Berkeley, CA 94704
    (510) 649-8002
(not knowledgeable no consultation, used wrong jewerly, cheap jewelry, sanitation)

I am sure that there are plenty of people out there who have gotten great piercings from Zebra, but after my expierience I view them as bad.

Slam Bad Piercers Promote Good Piercers (or tattoo artists etc)

Mikey, I also have a late 2.8 Ghz machine, can you tell me the web url or part number of the 8 GB memory you ordered from Crucial.

I recommend buying your memory from MacSales. They're a high-quality supplier of memory, SSDs, and all sorts of other upgrades for Macs. They've noted this memory capacity mystery on the 2008 Unibody MacBook for years and finally sorted it out.

Crucial is a good vendor (and an advertiser here ;-) but I would give this business to MacSales. This page (http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3) lists the parts you need from them and has a link on how to ensure you have the firmware needed to access all 8GB of memory.

Actually, I think Apple is starting to push into the business market. They seem very serious about their upcoming Xserve launch in the next couple weeks and the iMacs make excellent office computers. Not to mention the current commercial specifically mentioning that their systems run MS Office. I'm willing to bet we'll see a bigger business/corporate market push by Apple once Office goes universal binary.

Anyway, while we're on that subject, does anyone know of a good accounting program for the Mac? And NOT Quickbooks! I despise that software, Intuit has over-simplified it to a point where it actually takes too many redundant steps to do a lot of things. That and its payroll support is a joke since you have to pay them extra to use it and well... I'm not even going to go there.

The GMA iMac is too expensive and doesn't offer enough customization to make a good business desktop. It makes a very good education system though.

That was the PCie x1900 (cut down version of the x1900xt available for the intel mac pro) as it only had 256mb ram.. iam not too sure how much further it was cut down, iam thinking it also had less pipelines than the MP version.

No. The X1900gto only had less ram.

as I was pretty satisfied with the geforce 6800 256MB video card.
The 6800 is one of the slowest video cards available.
    Read here: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php
Out of 943 cards, the 6800 is #311 and the X1900 is #116.

Don't feel bad though, the Rage 128 Ultra in my dual 450mhz PowerMac G4 is #933 on that list...

Am I reading that right? Your G5 can't view 1080? it plays fluid on my Dual 2.7. YouTube or Quicktime.
That is correct. Any G5 under the 2.5Ghz models struggles to play 1080p. In Quicktime format its fine, but MKV or FLV its unwatchable.
