First off, this looks very much like core technology, not a product description.

The concept of overlays is a natural follow-on to any kind of multi-touch technology. It makes sense.

If you're doing audio recording (for instance), a bunch of virtual on-screen sliders that can be manipulated simultaneously using multiple-touches on a trackpad-like surface is an important feature. But if you can't look down and know what sliders your fingers are on, it will be too confusing to work well.

Obviously, this problem can be solved with a simple painted-sheet overlay. Then you can see the sliders. But one solution begs another. Why not have mechanical sliders as well? This will make it the same as what audio people are used to working with now, but (presumably) an overlay will cost less than a standalone USB-based mixing console, since you only need the mechanics, not the electronics.

The rest of the patent clearly looks like the results of a brainstorming session. "Now that we've established the concept of mechanical overlays, what else could you conceivably overlay."

In terms of actual products, I can only think of two items likely to someday make it into products.

The first is the iPod control. Replace the click-wheel part with a pad. This is thinner and possibly cheaper than existing click-wheels. An overlay (hopefully not optional) can provide the tactile feedback necessary to make the whole deal work. Given that Apple is now selling games for iPods, a gaming overlay (say, with two plus-pads and select/start buttongs) would be a logical add-on.

The second would be a way to cut costs for laptops. Instead of a keyboard and a trackpad, make the entire upper surface a single multi-touch pad. Then bundle a keyboard overlay. This may be able to cut costs somewhat, and it has the potential to make the laptop spill-proof (it's easier to seal a touchpad than a keyboard.).

The possibility of alternate overlays to replace the keyboard seems pretty unlikely to me, but we might see stuff to overlay the lower-half of this surface (which would, by default, be configured to work like existing trackpads.) I'd expect any replacement laptop overlays to come from third parties not from Apple.

And no, I can't imagine anyone traveling with a bunch of overlays. More likely that the overlays would remain at the location where the apps are typically run.

For instance, if I work in a recording studio, I'd leave the mixer-board overlay in the studio, to use when I'm there doing recording. I probably wouldn't be doing much mixing on the subway.

switched it up again - this time some Slightly Stoopid with Angelo Moore from Fishbone. This is a shot from Slightly Stoopid's Flickr, taken at their Lundi Gras show in New Orleans at the House of Blues. Great damn show indeed it was!

Nice! I saw a Slightly Stoopid concert when they were up at one of the casinos here in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Battery life... feedback from anyone who has upgraded? Better or the same?

My battery on 4.2.1 was phenomenal. Ever since I upgraded to 4.3 (then 4.3.1, then 4.3.2), it has been noticeably poor. Would love to hear if this actually made any improvements in this area.

    heya,

Man, you Mac fanbois are funny...lol.

I just bought my first Mac two weeks ago, and I'm liking the hardware. But the one thing that does turn me off is the rabid fanboism of the Apple community *sigh*. There are many lovely Apple afficandos out there, but it's the overly vocal minority that turns me off.

It's like the less they know, the louder they shout. I think this thread shows the level of immaturity and ignorance quite well.

Please people, instead of crawling out of your mother's basement to yell "Apple rules! Nokia Sucks!", can you please do some research.

Groklaw has a fairly nice issue on the writeup:

    http://www.groklaw.net/articlebasic.php?story=20100828132209651

with an analysis by people probably far more qualified than you.

Nokia's patent complains are largely based on hardware - things like GSM, wireless radio transmission etc. Things that take billions of dollars of R&D, and that you can't really work around if you want to make say...gee...a cellular telephone?

Apple's patents are largely on nice, shiny things, and how certain user elements are arranged on the screen. Yes, they are a master of polish, and they're anally retentive and perfectionist in their products - but don't kid yourselves, it's much easier to work around these "patents" on the look and feel, than it is to make a phone that doesn't infringe on 20 years worth of RF and wireless technology.

And look - a smartphone is a mobile phone, kiddies. It's not some magicaly new device all on its own. At the end of the day, it has a radio transmitter, it connects to the GSM network. It's a cellphone, with PDA functionality built in, ok.

And Apple isn't litigious? What a joke? Apple is one of the more litigious tech companies out there. You compare them to Google, or IBM, or heck, even Microsoft recently, and they make them look like the Mother Teresa of patent generosity. Apple are as bad as Oracle, in my books.

Apple will sue anything left right and centre. Remember their patents on things like "multi-touch", or "touchscreen phones". What a joke. As I said above, I admire Apple (and I'm admiring my new Mac) for it's polish, and a good user experience.

But I'm an engineer by profession, and I don't underestimate how much more hard work it actually takes to create a robust, well-engineered phone that works...as a phone. The whole iPhone 4G antenna fiasco is a classic example - this was something that companies like Nokia, Motorola and RIM have figured out the hard way, with years and years of research and engineering - and it's something that Apple will hopefully catchup to.

    Cheers,
    victor

I'm not a fanboi. In fact, I've been called a Apple bashing troll here before.

But I have to say... Keep your day job. You're probably a better engineer than you are an analyst. As far as cell phones go...

    Apple is suing HTC.

Nokia is suing SEVEN CELL PHONE MANUFACTURERS!

And Apple is counter-suing as a defense mechanism no doubt.

Apple is being sued by at least 4 companies related to cell phones.

While carbon fiber would make an ideal material for a larger iPod model or the iPhone, the exorbitant production cost of carbon fiber structures (especially the need to use an autoclave to "cure" carbon fiber) would make Steve Jobs blanch and he would drop the idea in no time flat.

The use of Liquidmetal would probably make more sense, since the production costs are way lower.

    Probably mentioned before:

iLife '07 will have CoreAnimation at a center of it's core [probably] and that is obviously in Leopard only. iLife '07 will be released when Leopard gets released.

Yay, more whining till Leopard.

i was waiting for a os x gpu client before i did it. seems much more efficient than cpu folding

A good folding farm running a bunch if bigadv units and with their bonuses could bring in more than GPU clients. My 950 @ 4ghz brings in 27k+ PPD with the bonus.

I don't understand the big deal, it's the same iPhone 4.. but in white.
In fact i think the white iPad 2 and the white iPhone 4 start looking more yellow and tacky as Apple products.
The product is nearing it's flagship life, the iPhone 5 will be coming out in a few months.

Here is another ideal to consider. Instead of going after the traditional networks and providers and as many have pointed out many of those networks whether GSM or CDMA do not have enough bandwidths to make an Iphone really usuable.

I think they will deploy WiMax iPhone since the chip sets are standard based verses proprietary technology from Qualcom and others for CDMA and GSM which have very close relation ships with the current cell phone companies and service providers.

WiMax is the next generation wireless technology which will be deployed by companies like Earthlink for wireless broadband internet access. This is something I can see Apple doing verses trying working a deal with the current services providers.

My only complaint is the slowness of Outlook syncing with Exchange 2010. There's at least 20 seconds delay when getting email on my iOS device before Outlook 2011 opens it. Outlook 2010 is instant.

I am not a heavy user of Office products.

This is annoying for me as well. But I believe it's due to the way that Outlook 2011 has to connect. Outlook 2010 uses MAPI whereas Outlook 2011 uses EWS. I'm guessing EWS doesn't support push, or is limited to only checking once a minute.

Mobile DDR3 1.3ghz is the same speed, and will bench the same as Desktop DDR3 1.3ghz. The only difference between desktop ram and mobile ram is that desktop ram can reach speeds higher than 1.3ghz and can be over clocked. While Mobile ram takes awhile to reach higher speeds (It wasn't until 2010 where mobile DDR3 reached 1.3ghz) and the dimms are smaller, and cost more for there smaller size. Speed wise, if they are listed the same speed, both will bench the same.

Apple using mobile GPU's is simply because of heat/speed ratio. Even a 27 inch iMac couldn't take the heat generation of a Nvidia 470/570/580. Mobile GPU generally provide excellent performance with less heat output. Until high end desktop video cards start becoming single slot solutions again and finally tackle heat generation, Apple will most likely continue to only put mobile GPU's in iMacs.

Thanks for taking the time to explain it

Yes I agree. What do you think the decline has been attributed to?

1: The Big Club. You know - the big corporations and the politicians they have in their pockets, lobbying to get more for themselves and less for everybody else. They do whatever they want because people are ignorant or they don' t care (see below). I'm talking about the bank managers who pay their executives million-dollar bonuses and get the politicians to cover the red numbers with the taxpayer's money.

2: The masses. They don't care about the Big Club because they are too busy watching cheap TV-entertainment while consuming their microwaved dinners - just a modern version of the classical "bread and circus".

Government expansion. Setting up entitlement programs on autopilot which grow 20% faster than inflation indefinitely.

At what point dis we decide that we NEED medicare, farm subsidies, and 50 weeks + of unemployment benefits? And who is naive enough to belief that the taxpayers can keep them afloat forever?

We won't crash because our businesses are too successful. We'll crash because our government is too getting big, inefficient, and we are becoming dependent on it

    This.

It would make more sense (to me).

They could just launch their own service and eventually buy up Netflix as well. My own suspicion is that Apple would try to do it directly and as they get some blowback from the Studios, then try to aquire Netflix to go around.

The day the iPhone was introduced, the Smartphone Market became an iPhone-alike Market, and to produce an iPhone-alike phone, you need access to Apple's patents. That's what Nokia is after, or else it's dead. Making-out with Microsoft doesn't give Nokia everything it needs, and leaves it open to litigation: they say that attack is the best form of defence, so Nokia is just doing what it thinks it needs to do to survive.

I have relatives living in various 3rd-world countries, and even the less-well-off wouldn't buy a 3GS, but they are willing to pay top dollar (or the local eq) for the iPhone4.

Tanker-loads of Nokia faithful are dumping their Nokia phones for iPhones and Blackberrys -- even Android has a long fight ahead of it in these (non-geek/techy) markets.

I think that Apple, Inc. will having a special event for other new product launches. If they do have one of these special events then I can very well see iLive '07 and a briefing of Leopard. I do not expect to see any hardware updates cause the lines have been updated not too long ago. I wouldn't get all huffy and puffy about certain products were not announced or talked about. Apple, Inc. probably has a very good reasons to why they make their keynote soley about the iPhone.

After seeing something about an iChat application for Windows, I wonder if there isn't a huge event coming where the Cocoa application framework will be available on Windows suddenly and all Apple software will work on both platforms.
