I have a feeling this exercise by AT&T Mobility is a lot like pushing the "Cross-the-Street" button on New York City stoplights. i.e. Makes you think your helping, but in reality having no effect on anything! :)

Scotty has been at Apple working on the formula for transparent aluminum according to this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9kTVZiJ3Uc&feature=related). As you can see, the Materials Dept at Apple doesn't get the preview versions of Lion

You can find or make "transparent carbon" already. To make cheap big pieces you need nanotech.

    "Transparent aluminium". Meh.

I hope they touch on the proximity sensor too, but I have a feeling its going to be about the antenna only.

Me too. I honestly think the proximity sensor is a bigger issue, in a way, because there IS a remedy (though some don't like it) by using a case. Whereas the proximity sensor is what it is, and we're powerless to fix it, or remedy it unless Apple recognizes, addresses it, and fixes it. But with all the attention to the antenna, I'm afraid the proximity sensor stuff is (for now) slipping thru the cracks.

Apple would be the heroes if they address this tomorrow. They'd do themselves a favor to be the first to make it widely known, then to have it become phase two in iPhonegate.

    Very nice!

Could you post your wallpaper? Thanks!

As for me, I've got my iPod touch 4g 32gb and it has become my computer, thanks to jb. 95% of what I use a computer for now can be done on this amazing little device. I can even connect in to an external monitor and use my :apple: bt keyboard. BTW, mobile terminal is awesome.

I almost find it more likely that an oled keyset, similar to this would be stuck in (http://www.artlebedev.com/everything/optimus/) a mac before a entirely touchpad interface, but then again, I'm not an apple exec.

I really dislike this view. If you move to a country you should conform to their laws but not necessarily to the culture. Tourists should experience our culture (that's half the reason I love going on holiday) but it shouldn't be forced!

I don't like the idea of Islamic women wearing a veil, but it shouldn't be banned totally. Maybe restricted for security reasons (eg in airports) and maybe in schools so children can interact with their teacher better but not banned in public full stop. I do like the French law that says anyone who forces someone else to cover themselves should be prosecuted.

I don't mind if people move to the UK and don't learn English or live in a different way to me. It can be great to have other cultures around- just look at what it has done to English food (no longer meat + 2 veg like 50 years ago).

All I ask is that people contribute to UK society, they don't have to contribute to my specific culture.

hm i dislike that view so you think its alright too if a women from the UK is visiting Iran and walks around wearing a mini skirt

and as i am a "immigrant" as i am German ,but i speak english as i live in the UK , not because i would be forced to , but it makes communicating with the English Scots and Welch easier and for me thats common sense , ok i speak a little french , spanish , italien too , just because i sometimes go in these countries for holiday , and as i have traveled when i was younger around the whole Mediterranean sea i speak some arab too ,as its widely understood in islamic countries , ok none of those to a high degree , but still enough to communicate and i did not learn to speak those languages because i would have been forced to , but it makes life easier if i speak the language of the country i am visiting ,i get easier in contact with the people and their culture too , and for me that's the prime reason to visit another country , and i respect their culture and would not wear shorts and t-shirt in counties where its not custom to do so , even i come from a country where its normal to wear shorts and t-shirt
for example of customs or cultures in europe , we have a lot of nudist beaches in Germany , but i would not walk on Dover beach naked and argue i am allowed to because i am German and its part of my culture , but i could for example go shopping wearing absolutely no cloth at all in the city of Le Cap d'Agde in France as there the whole town is is an entirely clothing-optional city (population 40,000)

and if people dont use common sense then you need laws to enforce things that are not acceptable in certain countries , just because they are acceptable in others does not make it right

"Empire" is nothing but an ancient notion for a federation with a relatively large territory governed by a president (instead of emperor/empress). The Russian Empire is now called Russian Federation. The German Empire is called Federal Republic of Germany.

The United States government rules at least 50 countries, so it's certainly an empire. I'm obviously talking about Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California... and another 45 countries from sea to shining sea.

Is it as sporadic as it looks at 11am in my town? It does look like it could give details on any street, though. That would be better than the FM traffic or even the DOT/camera based traffic used for most things. Esp during road construction when side streets with no other data accumulation become thoroughfares for the summer.

Because it is crowd sourced, its information is only as good as the folks using the app. That is a huge downside, if you live in a rural area where not many people actually have smartphones (or in the case of Apple doing crowd sourced mapping an iPhone).

The easy part is going to be to connect it to the Internet. Basically, you just need a router that will port forward or let you login to a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Then it will be just like being on your LAN when you login remotely. Given that you are talking about hosting video, you might want to look at what the Internet connection's upload speed is and plan accordingly.

On the server side there are a lot of options. It always gets said, so I will say it first - RAID is not about backup. It is about availability. You need to have a backup strategy and RAID isn't it. That is going to add to your costs since you are talking about a lot of data.

In terms of the array, The only way to get to 30TB realistically is some sort of RAID. You probably are going to want something like RAID5 or RAID6 which will allow for one or more drive failures without losing the whole array. Something to consider - to get to 30TB under those circumstances you are going to need upwards of 40TB of hard drives. So your hardware is going to have to support that. For reliability, you might want to consider buying enterprise class drives.

You could get some sort of rack-mounted array that can support 48+ drives (assuming a bunch of 1TB drives in the array, although you could go with 2TB drives as well). You can link several smaller cases together and connect them to a Mac Pro with additional hardware that supports RAID. That assumes you want to go the Mac route for the software side. With Lion merging the serve OS that could make things a lot easier.

How many users are you planning on supporting? Are you planning on doing more than just hosting video files? Email? Calendar? Web services? (what sort of Internet connection you have plays in here as well). If it's just a couple users, your server probably doesn't need to be a high end Mac Pro. Still, look at what you are buying. This could easily be a $25,000 plus project. And don't forget the whole backup strategy which can be expensive in terms of equipment and more expensive in terms of disciplined time investment.

I've mentioned the Internet connection a couple of times as well. Don't forget the LAN configuration either. You are going to want a Gigabit switch that can support multiple users and lots of data. A second Ethernet port on the comput for both more speed and redundancy is probably a good idea as well.

All of this may mean that it is worth some investment with a professional to design the system and provide you with a maintenance contract and support for the hardware and software. In a business environment, that might be worth the investment.

Apple doesn't have Xserve anymore, but they may have something else coming down the pike (don't hold your breath). That might be a good option. Otherwise you can always go with Linux or Windows - but if all your other equipment is Apple, I'd try and stick with the all-Mac configuration to keep things simple.

Good luck, sounds like an interesting project. I think you'll learn a lot.

The market cap of Netflix is 12 billion, add another 3 to 5 billion for a buyers premium, and it would take a pretty large chunk of the Apple cash reserves.

I think you are right. Buying Netflix would be like paying $1200 per subscriber (isn't this astonishing? Imagine Apple would paying you $10 a month for ten years for watching movies). Better to invest less than 15 billion dollars and try to build something own. Also Apple is extremely conservative and cautious in buying other companies. They only buy relatively small firms every few years.

You do realize that Jobs is not an engineer. Nor has he ever programmed anything.

I have read all the patents where he's the first name listed. There's only about a half dozen, mostly ideas related to iPods and icons. And that gooseneck monitor arm. Oh, and he came up with the slide-to-power-off thingie you see if you hold down the iPhone power button.

My favorite: while the iPhone was being worked on by his employees, he applied for a patent for a telephone dial UI driven by a clickwheel. It was almost as cool as the Onion's "MacBook Wheel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BnLbv6QYcA)" parody:

that patent was a joke dude lol. http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2010/12/apple-wins-patent-for-their-great-faked-out-rotary-dial-iphone.html

Actually, sake is brewed like beer, not fermented like wine. It does drink like a wine, though. Thus the confusion.

daver, beer requires fermentation the hops is brewed to extract the bitters to add to the fermenting liquid in the vats otherwise you get no alcohol. I know I come from a long family line of brewers, wine makers and moonshiners I know intimately every step from making the mash or wort to the process of distillation. I would like to know how you make beer or any sort of alcohol at all without the fermentation process which is something very essential to the process. Wines require it, liquor requires it, and beer requires it...surprisingly enough even real root beer requires fermentation and that is a stunted process because before it produces a noticeable amount of alcohol it gets bottled to retain the natural carbonation. Even alcohol used for fuel (ethanol) requires fermentation over a period of time before distillation and use as an additive to gasoline. Fermentation doesn't always require yeast to make alcohol either but it is the most efficient and cost effective means for speeding up the process. No confusion here.

Buick Rendezvous, Nissan Cube, post-03 Maxima, 2011 Acura TL, 2001 Toyota Sienna, and so on.

Not that the Juke isn't ugly.

while i agree that the current Cube turned out way to ugly (it looked like it melted) especially those windows, the generation before it was actually really nice looking
but asymetrical stylings simply won't sell at all, and for the european market it simply was way too expensive for what it offered (in japan it's a _cheap_ car not a 20k euro car)

for the others i might have to look them up on the internet, i suspect they are US market only

for upcoming style disasters: Hyundai Veloster: their answer to the "going-so-great" market of small sporthatch-back coupes populated by the VW Scirocco, Honda CR-Z, and Renault Megane Coup
one can call the CR-Z bold or controversial (i for example like it) but the Veloster ? hideous front , asymetrical door layout: 2 doors on the right, 1 long door on the left, and a hatch in the back with the size of a newspaper
